About Mike
A hometown leader.
The son of a small business owner and town newspaper editor, Mike learned first hand the value of hard work and community service from his parents, Len and Laura. Mike graduated from Bates College and received both his Medical degree and MBA from Georgetown University.
Today, Mike and his wife Trish are committed to passing on these same values of hard work and service to their three children, Abigail, Emily and Sander. An active community member, Mike is on the Board of Directors for the Grand Opera House and the Delaware Theatre Company and has served on the board of the Milton and Hattie Kutz Nursing Home, where he worked to ensure our seniors enjoy their golden years with dignity. Mike has received numerous awards from the American Medical Association for his distinguished leadership and service.
A trusted physician.
A respected doctor, Mike is committed to ensuring all Delawareans receive the best possible health care. That's why during the winter of 2008 when Aetna, one of Delaware's largest insurance providers, started refusing to cover the anesthesia necessary for colonoscopies, Mike refused to stay silent. Considering the pain and discomfort of colonoscopies, Mike feared without proper anesthesia that many individuals would simply opt-out of this critical cancer screening. Refusing to let big insurance bully Delawareans, Mike took a stand—and won. Working with state leaders, such as then Insurance Commissioner Matt Denn, Mike helped unite doctors and patients across Delaware to force Aetna to cover the full cost of colonoscopies. As our State Senator, Mike continues to hold insurance companies accountable while ensuring all Delawareans have access to affordable care.
His medical experience includes five years at the renowned Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children as an attending physician in anesthesiology and as an assistant professor at the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. As a managing partner of a local physicians group, Mike sees first hand the health care needs of Delaware families on a daily basis.
A real plan to move Delaware forward.
Mike knows our state is a wonderful place to grow up, live and raise a family. As a doctor and small-business owner, Mike is working to bring a much-needed dose of fiscal responsibility to Dover. He’s fighting for good, efficient government—and committed to passing the savings on to you, the taxpayer.
Mike’s plan for change in Delaware includes lowering taxes by reducing state spending, creating good paying jobs, opening up government, ensuring our children have strong schools and providing all citizens access to affordable health care.
